What Are Fibroids?

Fibroids (leiomyomas) are noncancerous growths of the uterus that can vary widely in size, number, and location.

Most women will develop fibroids by age 50. Some never experience symptoms, while others may have significant discomfort or bleeding.

Types of Fibroids
Submucosal

Inside the uterine cavity — may cause heavy bleeding or affect fertility.

Intramural

Within the uterine muscle — may cause heavy periods or pelvic pain.

Subserosal

On the outer wall of the uterus — may cause pressure, bloating, or urinary frequency.

Pedunculated

Attached by a stalk — can sometimes cause sharp pain if twisting occurs.
